49ers Split on Second Day of LB Invite

49ers Pull Out Win Over Southern Utah, But Can't Handle Bruins LAKEWOOD, CA -- The 49ers (8-14) finished the second day of the Long Beach Invitational with a split as they defeated Southern Utah (10-14) 2-1, and then fell in the nightcap to No. 12-ranked UCLA by a 12-1 count. Bridgette Pagano (7-4) went the distance against Southern Utah allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. Five different 49ers notched a hit in game one as Ashley Levine led the way (1-for-2) with a hit, a walk and a run scored. The 49ers pushed two runs across in the third inning with Levine scoring on a passed ball and Whitney Radcliff scoring on a throwing error by the Thunderbirds catcher Marci Pratt. Southern Utah struck once in the bottom of the fourth inning but couldn't do much more as Pagano held the Thunderbirds scoreless for the final three innings. In the nightcap, the Bruins came out swinging as they pushed five runs across in the top of the first, including a solo-homerun by Kaila Shull off of Lacy Tyler. The Bruins also saw a homerun from Tara Henry as they overpowered the 49ers in the 12-1 victory. The 49ers committed five errors in the game. The 49ers will return to action tomorrow for the final day of the Long Beach Invitational as they take on Eastern Kentucky at 12:15 pm at Mayfair Park.
