49ers Sweep by Lancers
LONG BEACH, CA -- Long Beach State snapped Cal Baptist's nine game winning streak on Friday evening as they swept the NAIA's No. 1-ranked team 30-27, 30-25, 30-25. The 49ers improved to 6-5 overall, while the Lancers fell to 9-5. Four 49ers posted double-figure kills, led by Norm Hutton and Daniel Fabry who had 13 kills apiece. Paul Lotman chipped in 11 kills and two aces while Dan Alexander hit an impressive .769 (11-1-13) on the evening. Michael Iandolo had 43 assists and eight digs as he led the 49er offense to a .371 hitting percentage. Shamsu Awudu led the Lancers with a match-high 20 kills as he hit for a .486 clip. Donald Baliaba chipped in 12 kills while Eric Plunkett directed Cal Baptist to a .326 hitting percentage with 40 assists. The 49ers scored the last three points in game one as they pulled away with a 30-27 victory. LBSU held an early 4-1 lead after consecutive aces from Lotman, but the Lancers were able to tie it up at 13-13 after a kill from Awudu. It remained close the rest of the way until LBSU pushed ahead after two kills from Fabry gave the 49ers a 29-27 lead. An attack error by Baliaba ended the set. The 49ers hit .333 to the Lancers .276 in game one. The 49ers were able to overcome a .462 Cal Baptist hitting percentage in game two as they pulled out a 30-25 win. The 49ers used an 8-4 run capped by a kill from Lotman to take a 27-19 lead. LBSU was able to hold off a late Lancer surge as a service error by Urs Gunthor ended the set. Long Beach State ran away with the lead late in the third set to complete the three-game sweep with a 30-25 victory.
