CSUN Tops Long Beach State In 5

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Long Beach State 49ers (6-6, 3-5 MPSF) put up a fight but ended up falling to Cal State Northridge (7-7, 5-4 MPSF) in five sets on Thursday evening. Game scores were 28-30, 30-20, 30-21, 28-30, 19-17.
The 49ers have dropped three matches to the Matadors this year, and five straight dating back to 2006.
Dustin Watten patrolled the back row with a career-high 17 digs in the loss. Norm Hutton led the 49ers with 19 kills, while Paul Lotman posted 17 kills, nine digs, and five blocks. Dan Alexander chipped in nine kills, and Dean Bittner had eight kills hitting for a .412 clip. Michael Iandolo dished out 64 assists as the 49ers hit .206 on the evening.
Isaac Kneubuhl had a double-double for the Matadors with 10 kills and 10 digs. Dan Rhodes recorded a match-high 23 kills, while Eric Vance had 15 kills hitting .333 on the evening. Travis Bluemling posted three kills and 54 assists as he directed the Matadors offense to a .248 hitting percentage.
The 49ers took the game one victory as they hit .386 to the Matadors .185, but LBSU then dropped the next two sets with a –.053 and -.065 hitting percentage in games two and three respectively. Despite hitting .550 in game five, the 49ers fell 19-17.
Long Beach State returns to action on Saturday as they travel to No. 3-ranked UC Santa Barbara for a 7 pm MPSF match.
