Perry and Tweedy Provide Offense for Manny McElroy's First Win

LONG BEACH, CA-- Manny McElory (1-0), at one point retired 14 of 16 batters, en route to No. 30-ranked Long Beach State (1-1-1) evening the series with visiting USC (2-1) following a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon. Robert Perry and Jason Tweedy had two hits a piece, as Perry's diving catch in right field robbed Hector Estrella of a base hit in the ninth and preserved the win. The crowd of 2297 was the 23rd largest at Blair Field for an LBSU contest.

McElroy pitched into the seventh for his first Division-I win, using just 83 pitches and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over six and one third innings. McElroy at one point retired seven in a row and did not allow a hit from the third until Derek Perren led off the seventh with a double.

Reliever Adam Wilk got the next four outs, with LBSU up 5-3, as he got into trouble by putting runners on at first and second with one out. After striking out Lucas Duda, Bryan Shaw came on and struck out pinch-hitter Darren Gemoll in the eighth, he went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his first save.

A two-run home run by Jason Corder in the first gave LBSU an early 2-0 lead, as a two-run triple by TJ Mittelstaedt in the second re-took the lead at 4-2. All four of the runs were unearned, based on three USC errors as Brad Boxberger (0-1) gave up all four runs over the first five innings.

Robert Perry tacked on a run in the sixth off a two-run RBI single, the fifth run the Dirtbags scored with two outs.

Two errors by second baseman Matt Cline led to USC's first run in the first, before a solo homer by Hector Estrella in the second tied it at 2-2 in the second.

The series concludes on Sunday at noon at Dedeaux Field. Anthony Vasquez (0-0) is the starter for USC, against Omar Arif (0-0)in a Southpaw matchup.
