49ers Head to Two-Day UC Irvine Invitational
Beach Coming Off Strong Performance at Hawaii

NATIONAL STATISTICS LONG BEACH, CA--Long Beach State water polo (3-2), under first year Head Coach Catharine von Schwarz, will head to the inaugural UC Irvine Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on campus, and Corona del Mar High School off of Jamboree Blvd. and Eastbluff. The 16-team tournament will feature nearly all of the MPSF, as well as LMU, Michigan, Santa Clara, UC Davis and UC San Diego. Two of the 49ers three wins have been come from behind victories, while their two losses have been by a combined three goals. The 49ers, who are coming off a two-goal loss at No. 4-ranked Hawaii, will open up with No. 3-ranked USC on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Corona del Mar High. The winner plays at 2 p.m. and the loser plays at 3:15 p.m. at CDMHS against either LMU or UC Davis. On Sunday, if LBSU wins the opener over USC, they will play two games at UC Irvine, if they lose the opener, they can play for as high as ninth place at CDMHS. Three players lead the 49ers with nine goals a piece, Cecilia and Marina Canetti and Christina Wensman. Cecilia has hit 50 percent of her shots on the season, while Marina has a team-best 32 earned ejections. Wensman leads the club with five assists and has led the team in scoring three times. Goalie Kim Hayes has 44 saves over the first five games of the season, moving her into third place all-time in career saves. Saturday, February 24th - Anteater Aquatics Complex
