Dirtbags Can't Comeback for Third Straight Day LONG BEACH, CA-- After pulling off last at-bat comebacks over the first two games of the series, No. 30-ranked Long Beach State (4-2) sent the wining run to the plate in the ninth, only to fall 2-1 to No. 7-ranked Texas (3-4). Kip Masuda began the rally with a one-out single, and after Allen Woods pinch-ran for him, Woods promptly stole second. Following a popup, Randy Boone picked up Texas' first save of the season by striking out Robert Perry. The 6286 fans for the series was the third largest in program history, as it saw LBSU take two of three. Adrian Alaniz (2-1) started off with three, pre-determined shutout innings of five-hit ball to get the win, before Jeff Russell pitched the next three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. Steve Tinoco pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh cut the lead to 2-1 off of Joseph Krebs who pitched two innings of relief, before handing it over to Boone. Texas went up 1-0 in the second off a fielder's choice and took a 2-0 lead in the fourth off an RBI single from Travis Tucker, his second RBI of the game. Omar Arif (1-1) had his longest Division-I outing at either TCU, where he spent three seasons, or LBSU, going five and two-third innings, giving up just those two runs on nine hits. He struck out five and walked two. David Roberts pitched the next two shutout innings, keeping the game close. The Dirtbags travel to top-ranked Rice next weekend for a three-game series in Houston, TX. |
