Capon Wins it Tonight Following Seven-Run Comeback LONG BEACH, CA-- Brian Capon picked a good time to pick up his first Divison-I hit. Capon, the team's third catcher of the day, hit a two-out, single to center, plating Danny Espinosa and leading No. 30-ranked Long Beach State (4-1) to an 9-8, comeback over No. 7-ranked Texas (2-4) in 10 innings before 2310 at Blair Field on Saturday evening. LBSU won Friday night's game with three runs in the ninth inning. The senior had entered the game in the top of the 10th inning after appearing in six games last year following two seasons in junior college. Espinosa started the rally with a two-out double and Shane Peterson was intentionally walked to get to Capon. Bryan Shaw, an (1-0) picked up the win, pitching three shutout innings and striking out a career-best five. Randy Boone (0-2), Sunday's expected starter for Texas, took the loss, pitching the final three-plus innings. It was the second time this week (the suspended game at Pepperdine was the first) the Dirtbags came back from a seven-run deficit. Jason Corder homered twice in the contest, hitting a solo homer to ignite a five-run third and another solo blast in the sixth to make it 8-7. It was the first two homer game by a LBSU player since former first round pick, Troy Tulowitzki, hit two against Stanford in the 2004 Regionals. Andrew Liebel threw a career-best four shutout innings, scattering six hits and striking out two. He left two on base to start the eighth in an 8-8 tie, as Bryan Shaw came on, deaked an intentional walk on a 3-2 pitch for a called strike three, before getting Pat McCory to strike out as well. After intentionally walking Kyle Russell, he got a weak groundout to lead the bases full. After chasing starter Manny McElroy from the game in the second following six runs and a Longhorn 7-0 lead, LBSU scored five runs in the third to close to with 7-5. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
