49ers Drop Season Opener to Hartwick
LA JOLLA, CA-- Long Beach State (1-1) scored three unanswered goals over the final four minutes of the game to comeback and defeat CS Bakersfield 9-8 in the nightcap of the Triton Invitational and give new Head Coach Cat von Schwarz her first career win. The 49ers had dropped the opener 10-8 to Hartwick. The 49ers staked the Roadrunners to a 8-6 advantage with 3:50 left as Megan Winchell and Marina Canetti tallied goals to tie it, before Christiana Wensman's third goal of the contest put The Beach ahead 9-8 with 1:19 left. The goal was set up following a Megan Winchell steal and Marina Canetti earned ejection, as Canetti's game-tying goal was her third of the game and fifth of the day. Goalie Kim Hayes then made one of her eight saves moments later, before Canetti came up with a field block to keep the 49ers in front. "Obviously I was pretty nervous going into it," said von Schwarz. "The girls really did well. They competed all the way through and each quarter got better and better. They showed a lot of heart to comeback after a tough loss and then pull out a win later in the day." The 49ers dropped its season opener at the Triton Classic Hartwick 10-8, as The Beach were outscored 4-1 in the second period. Cecilia and Marina Canetti and Christina Wensman had two goals a piece in the loss as the 49ers were tied 3-3 after the first period, before Hartwick led 7-4 at the half. LBSU then played with them the rest of the game, outscoring the Hawks 4-3 in the second half. Hayes had eight saves in both contests. The tournament continues on Sunday with two matches, with LBSU playing at 10:30 a.m. The team can play for as high as ninth place. |
