Cal Poly Upsets 49ers in First Round of Big West Tournament
FULLERTON— Third-seeded Cal Poly (8-9-2) rebounded from an earlier to loss to the 49ers to beat second-seeded Long Beach State (13-7-0) 2-1 in the first round of the Big West Tournament. The 49ers dominated the game shot wise, out shooting Cal Poly 21-to-3, but two of those shots counted to give the Mustangs the victory. The 49ers had beaten the Mustangs a week earlier, 3-1, knocking them out of hosting duties, as Cal Poly finished a half game behind co-champions LBSU and CS Fullerton. Alli Tramel made six saves in net for the Mustangs, despite numerous 49er chances. LBSU will await a possible at-large bid, coming in with an RPI of 50, the highest in the Big West, as the 64-team bracket will be announced Monday at 5 p.m. on ESPN News. Lindsay Bullock's goal 15 yards out with seven and a half minutes remain cut the Mustang lead to 2-1. Bullock's shot with 1:17 left, which would have tied it, rolled a foot wide of the net to the right side. Cal Poly went up 1-0 in the 53rd minute when Ashley Vallis scored on a wide open net after Monica Hemendez went 1-v-1 with LBSU goalkeeper Breanna Truelove on the near side, leaving Vallis wide open on the far side. It was the Mustangs first shot on goal. The Mustangs added to the lead in 72nd minute when Carissa Voegele scored on a Sharon Day shot off the cross bar, which rebounded to Voegele to make it 2-0. It was the team's second and third shots of the contest. LBSU had a chance to tie it in the 68th minute, but Bolt's header off a re-start was saved. The 49er defense did not allow a first half shot by the Mustangs, out shooting Cal Poly 6-to-0, getting three legitimate chances at goal saved by goalkeeper Alli Tramel. LBSU had a chance to take an early lead in the 15th minute, when Lindsay Bullock's shot was saved off a corner kick. Kim Silos had a chance to give the 49ers a lead in the 38th minute, but Tramel punched it out leading to an unsuccessful corner kick, one of three in the first half for LBSU. Kristen Kiefer's shot was saved with a minute to go in the half. |
