49ers to Host Alumnae Game

49ers to Host Alumnae Game on Saturday LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State water polo will officially get going in one week, but the team will host an alumnae game on Saturday at the campus pool at 11 a.m. Catharine von Schwarz is in her first year at the helm, as the 49ers are coming off a 15-14 season and return five of seven starters. LBSU has finished with a winning record in each of the last six seasons, ranking in the top-five nationally from 2002 to 2005. The 49ers open the regular season on February 10 and 11 at the UC San Diego Triton Invite in La Jolla. Returning for the 49ers are Brazilian National Team member, Marina Canetti, the team's third leading scorer from last year, as well as senior Christian Wensman. Wensman had the second-most goals last season. Kim Hayes will again be in goal, after tallying the fourth-most goals in school-history. New to the team and expected to make an impact are Cecilia Canetti, sister of Marina and also a member of the Brazilian National Team, and Golden West College transfers Geraldine Di Tommaso and Brittany Thornback. Some of the alumnae expected to play are: the former All-Americans Stacy Black, Roberta Stewart and Drue Wawrzynski and all-time saves leader Bri Hawkins.
