49ers Start Season at CS Fullerton Invite
Barclay and Wilvers Have Promising Starts
September 2, 2006
BREA, CA – Long Beach State started the season with both its men’s
and women’s “B” teams running at the Cal State Fullerton
Invite at Carbon Canyon Park on Saturday morning with Hudson Wilvers as
the top finisher for the men, and Missy Barclay leading the women.
Wilvers finished 33rd overall with a time of 27:00.80, matching his personal-best
from 2003. On the women’s side, Barclay finished 50th with a time
of 19:49.80 in her first collegiate meet. She was one of three 49ers to
finish in the top-80, along with Cheryl Bube (55th) and Jennifer Rodriguez
(79th).
“Today we were running most of our younger athletes and returnees
who have not raced in a while, but they did really well and it was very
encouraging for our program,” said Distance Coach Matt Roe. “Wilvers
has faced a lot of adversity over the last two years, but he’s coming
off a great track season and is showing that he can also be a very good
cross country runner. On the women’s side, Missy is young and raw,
but is extremely talented and ran very smart and tough today.”
The men’s team finished 12th overall (337) while the women ran four
individual runners.
The 49ers will return to action on Saturday, September 16, 2006 when they
travel to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational.
