49ers Post Best Start in School-History Following 1-0 Win FLAGSTAFF, AZ-- No. 23-ranked Long Beach State (7-1-0) posted its best start in school-history after tying the school-record for shots following the team's 1-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin (2-5-1) on Sunday morning at the Northern Arizona High Altitude Classic. Kristin Childers scored her first goal of the season, scoring off a rebounded corner kick attempt by Hayley Bolt and Sahar Haghdan at 76:36 to better the team's start from last year, which began the 2005 campaign at 7-1-1. The winning goal was set up after Kim Silos began the play with a corner to Bolt, who fired a shot, which was knocked out by Sullivan, it bounced off of Haghdan to Childers who gave LBSU a 1-0 lead. The 49ers took a record 34 shots on the day, as UTM goalkeeper Cara Sullivan had 11 saves as the 49ers remained on their offensive end for nearly the entire game, as the Skyhawks managed just three shots in the match. Sullivan saw a record 32 shots taken by NAU on Friday as the Skyhawks played much of the time with at least five players in the backfield. Bolt had two chances off of corner kicks to take the lead, missing headers in the 55th and 73rd minutes. Moments after the second corner, defender Natalie Messina went half the field and fired Sarah Stohl nearly made it 2-0 as on the very next time down the field, her shot was caught by Sullivan. Long Beach State kept on the ball on their end for nearly the entire first half, outshooting the Skyhawks 16-to-1. The 49ers took five shots on goal, as Sullivan saved a laser by Kim Silos in the 20th minute, caught a feed from Silos to Bolt in the 32nd minute and caught a point-blank shot by Erin Empting in the 41st minute. LBSU's defense did not let the ball cross midfield for the first 20 minutes, as Tennessee-Martin took its first shot in the 21st minute. The 49ers close out the roadtrip in the Spokane area next weekend, playing at Eastern Washington on Friday and at Gonzaga on Sunday. |
