EWU Nips 49ers 2-1 Snapping Winning Streak CHENEY, WA-- Eastern Washington (2-6-1) snapped No. 21-ranked Long Beach State's (7-2-0) four-match winning streak with a fluke goal in the 58th minute, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 victory on Friday evening. Cyeeta Mott scored the go-ahead goal at 57:34 after 49er goalkeeper Liz Ramos swung and missed at the ball on a clear, allowing Mott to score on an empty net. The 49ers, who outshot EWU 15-to-11 in the contest, rebounded from a flat first half to outshoot the Eagles 13-to-5 over the final 45 minutes. Kristin Childers apparently tied the match in the 83rd minute, as her shot went off the bottom of the cross bar and might have touched the netting, but was ruled out by the linesman. Eagle goalkeeper Tiera Como had five saves including a catch off a Hayley Bolt direct kick in the 61st minute and a Kim Silos shot following an indirect kick in the 88th minute. The Beach quickly tied it up in the second half as Dana Farquhar was the benefactor of a knocked around ball in the box, 38 seconds into the second half, tying the game 1-1 at 45:38. The goal neglected an Eagle goal in the first half, as LBSU played from behind in the first half for the first time all season following the Eagles score in the 38th minute from Carrie Connors. Connors took the ball down the right side of the field and found the bottom left corner from 20 yards out to give the Eagles the lead. EWU outshot The Beach 6-to-2 in the first half, as LBSU played a very flat half not taking any chances on goal. The Eagles had chances in the 24th and 26th minutes to take the lead, but each time Ramos made saves in the 49er net. The 49ers reamain in the Pacific Northwest and close out their road trip with a match at Gonzaga on Sunday at a later than scheduled, 1 p.m. start. |
