Baca Finds Silos For Game-Winner in Overtime, 1-0 SPOKANE, WA-- Sara Baca found Kim Silos streaking down the left side leading No. 21-ranked Long Beach State (8-2-0) to a 1-0 overtime victory over host Gonzaga (5-4-1) in the 95th minute on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers, who took just two shots over the final 50 minutes, made the final one count, as Baca passed to Silos, who scored from 18 yards out to give The Beach a split of their final road trip prior to conference play. "Today was a great character day for our team," said Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia. "We bounced back at a place where the home team has nearly been unbeatable over the last two years (16-3-1 at home since 2005). It was a very gutty performance after a long month and we are happy to be coming home on Friday." Both teams played to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes, as Gonzaga outshot The Beach 12-to-7 in regulation. The 49ers only shot in the second half came a half hour into the latter period, as Sahar Haghdan and Kim Silos took it deep in the GU end, only to have Haghdan shoot high when she was one-on-one with the keeper. Christine Soma gave GU a lead in the 67th minute only to have the goal called off due to offsides. Despite not taking a shot over the first 20 minutes of the second half, The Beach controlled the ball in a 0-0 tie. Gonzaga grabbed new life, taking four shots over a six minute period midway through the match, leading to three corner kicks. Both teams played a very even first half, as LBSU outshot the Zags 6-to-4. Hayley Bolt had the best chance to score in the13th minute as the sophomore took three consecutive shots inside the 18, as the first two shots were blocked and the final shot went high. Gonzaga had a chance to take a lead in the 38th minute, but Lacey Castleberry's shot was blocked out by 49er goalkeeper Liz Ramos. The 49ers finally return home after playing nine of their first 10 matches on the road, when they open up conference play against Pacific on Friday and CS Northridge on Sunday. |
