BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA-- Freshman Sarah Strohl found the back of the net in the 84th minute leading No. 24-ranked Long Beach State (5-1-0) to the City by the Bay Classic Championship following a 1-0 win over host University of San Francisco (2-4-0).

The winning score was setup by Kim Silos, who fired a corner kick in front of the net, as Strohl, the team's tallest player, was waiting on the left side and found the upper corner to give the 49ers a one-goal advantage. It was freshman's first goal after starting the season as a reserve and moving into the starting lineup for the first time last Sunday at UCLA.

"It was a good win on the road for us. USF was very motivated after coming off a big win on Friday," said Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia. "Sarah Strohl has done a good job adjusting to the college game and this is a great confidence booster for her, scoring late and winning the match."

USF nearly tied it up moments later, as shot by Chelsea Hunt was punched out by LBSU goalkeeper Liz Ramos, for one of her three saves on the day. A direct kick in the 88th minute by Fiona O'Sullivan 20 yards out was then blocked by a 49er wall keeping LBSU in front.

The 49ers ended the match outshooting USF 12-to-9 in a very physical match.

Bolt nearly gave the 49ers the lead in the 83rd minute after Dana Farquhar dribbled it down the right side. The ensuing corner kick went to the awaiting head of Bolt, who hit the cross bar, which kept it at a scoreless tie.

Bolt had two chances to give LBSU an early lead, missing a header off a corner kick in the ninth minute and missing another header in the 13th minute following a re-start. The Hilltoppers best chance at scoring came in the 36th minute when Katie Foster shot wide off a direct kick just outside the box.

The 49ers outshot the Dons 6-to-4 in the first half.

The 49ers remain on the road next week when they travel to Flagstaff, AZ for a two-day tournament hosted by Northern Arizona next weekend.
