Hughes Strikes Out Highlanders in Series Win RIVERSIDE, CA-- Jared Hughes (8-3) returned to Sundays and struck out a career-best 13, pitching a six-hit complete game and giving Long Beach State (29-24, 12-6 Big West) a 5-2 series victory over UC Riverside (28-23, 8-10 Big West). Hughes, who picked up eight wins as a the team's third starter last year was moved to Sundays this weekend, where LBSU has now won seven straight Sunday games. Evan Longoria hit his second home run of the weekend, and his 11th of the season, a solo shot in the sixth that made it 3-1. Longoria finished the day 2-for-5 and extending his hit streak to nine. The home runs are most by a Dirtbag since Jaeme Leal in 1999, when he hit a single-season record 24. Matt Cline had his third-straight multi-hit game, driving in the fifth run in the ninth to make it 5-2 and finishes 2-for-5. Jordan Struble added two more hits in his first career start at catcher. Robert Perry drove in two early runs for The Beach, hitting a solo homer (3) in the third to give LBSU an early 1-0 lead, before a sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 2-0. Hughes struck out the first four Highlanders of the game and retired the first nine batters in succession before a leadoff single by Grant in the fourth broke up the no-hitter. His 10th strikeout came with runners on the corners and two gone in a 3-1 game. Hughes had big strikeouts early in the game as well, as in the fourth, he used a little mischieve as well to keep LBSU in front. Hughes allowed back-to-back singles in the fourth, and then against DJ Hollingsworth, The Beach faked an intentional walk, before striking him out on a 3-2 pitch. Kyle Barratt then struck out with two outs to end the threat as LBSU remained in front 1-0. UCR twice closed to within one, as a Sergio Pedroza's RBI double in the fifth cut the lead in half to 2-1, before an Aaron Grant's RBI double in the seventh cut the Dirtbag lead to 3-2. James Simmons (8-5) went the first seven innings for UCR, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits. The Dirtbags conclude the regular season next weekend when they host CS Fullerton as part of college baseball's best rivalry beginning on Friday. The final Mike Weathers Show will be on Monday this week starting at 6 p.m. live from Cirivello's. |
