Dirtbags Watch Titans Win Big West Title LONG BEACH, CA-- In a battle of potential first round picks, it came down to a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly as Long Beach State (29-25, 12-7 Big West) watched as No. 2-ranked CS Fullerton (41-13, 16-3 Big West) won the Big West Conference title outright on the Dirtbags' homefield, 2-0, on Friday evenig. Wes Roemer (11-1) proved just as good as his record indicated, pitching six-hit shutout. Andrew Carpenter (7-4) came up on the short end of a pitcher's duel, giving up just two runs on five hits over the first seven innings. Carpenter struck out six and walked none. Evan Longoria extended his hit streak to 10 games with a double in the first inning. Carpenter was uncharacteristically wild in the first after giving up a one-out single to Blake Davis. The second of two wild pitches scored Davis to make it 1-0 in favor of CS Fullerton. A sacrifice fly in the sixth then made it 2-0. Carpenter retired seven in a row early and then twice retired five in a row, including the last five Titans he faced. The 2410 fans in the series opener was the 17th-largest crowd in school-history. The series continues on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. |
