Dirtbags Survive Marathon with 11-9 Win in 12 RIVERSIDE, CA-- Jordan Struble twice gave the Dirtbags the lead and was at the plate when Long Beach State (28-24, 11-6 Big West) scored three unearned runs in the 12th to tie the series with UC Riverside (28-22, 8-9 Big West) with an 11-9 win in 12 innings on a hot Saturday afternoon. Struble, who hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fifth and caught for just the second time in his LBSU career, came on with the bases loaded in the 12th and hit it off the hand of eventual loser Daniel Strange (2-3). Strange's throw home then sailed to the backstop and allowed two runs to score. A sacrifice fly then made it 11-8. Struble finished with two hits and drove in three. The Dirtbags took advantage of four UCR errors to score seven unearned runs in the game and give Brett Andrade (1-2) his first win of the season and Andrew Liebel, who pitched a scoreless 12th, his first career save. Sean Boatright had four hits on the day, as part of a 14-hit attack, while Evan Longoria added two hits, including his 10th home run of the season. Andrade pitched out of trouble throughout the latter half of the game, as he put two runners on in the ninth and 10th innings and each time got out of it, striking out the last two batters in the 10th. Overall, Andrade retired five in a row over three-plus innings, giving up one run on one hit. Vance Worley pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits, as reliever Shane Peterson gave up the game-tying RBI single to DJ Hollingsworth to make it 8-8 in the eighth, after LBSU took leads of 6-4 and 8-6. Struble ignited a five-run, fifth inning, as his two-run homer in the fifth made it 4-3. A sacrifice fly by Shane Peterson then tied it at 4-4, before Longoria's two-run homer made it 6-4. UCR then quickly tied it at 6-6 in the fifth with back-to-back doubles. Struble then powered an RBI single to right in the sixth to make it 7-6. It was the fourth-straight unearned run for the Dirtbags. A bases loaded hit by pitch made it 8-6 in the seventh. Haley Winter ran out of gas and maybe dropped a few pounds in 82-degree heat, giving up eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits over six-plus innings. Struble, after pinch hitting, was put in at catcher for only the second time in his two-year career, and second since April 22 at UC Davis. UCR took a 4-1 lead after four innings. The series finale will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
