Carpenter Runs Into Trouble in the Fifth to Lose for First Time in Six Weeks

RIVERSIDE, CA-- Long Beach State (27-24, 10-6 Big West) dropped its seventh series opener in its last 10, and third in succession, falling at host UC Riverside (28-21, 8-8 Big West) 7-1 on Friday evening.

Taylor Bills (5-4) pitched a complete-game, six-hitter, three times stranding the Dirtbags at third base during the game. Matt Cline had three of the six hits for The Beach.

Andrew Carpenter (7-3), making his first Friday start of the season, gave up four runs in the fifth and took his first loss since March 25, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over seven innings. He did strikeout eight.

Carpenter cruised through the first four innings as following a leadoff walk, he retired 11 in a row, before his no-hitter was broken up in the fourth with an infield single. Carpenter used just 39 pitches through the first four innings.

Carpenter then got into some trouble in the fifth, loading the bases before a two-run double by Brett Bigler made it 2-1. A fielding error by Evan Longoria made it 3-1, before a sacrifice fly then made it 4-1.

UCR added two more runs on three-straight two-out base hits to lead 6-1 in the seventh.

The Beach got on the board in first with an RBI single from Longoria to lead 1-0.

The series continues on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. as the final regular season road games for the Dirtbags.
