49ers Fall in First Round of MPSF Playoffs
IRVINE, CA-- No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (15-13), three times could not hold leads against seventh-seeded Arizona State (14-11), falling 8-6 in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. The 49ers will close out the season on Friday at 11:15 a.m. Tara Campbell had three goals and an assist in the loss. "They were much more physical than us, and out muscled us," said Head Coach Ken Lindgren. "We had our opportunities, and our girls played well, especially Tara, but our lapses cost us. Overall we've made tremendous improvement for being such a young team. They have nothing to be ashamed of by this season." The Beach opened up the game on a tear, as two of Tara Campbell's three goals came over the first eight and a half minutes of play, as LBSU built a 4-1 lead with 5:40 left in the second. But ASU would score three unanswered to tie it a 4-4, capped off with the firstof three goals by Katy Lawlor with 20 seconds left. The 49ers then built a 5-4 lead on a Campbell goal at 4:50 and then again on a Megan Winchell goal and Campbell assist at 4:08 in the fourth lead lead 6-5. Lawlor though would score two striaght goals at 2-meters and give ASU a 7-6 advantage. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
