49ers Beat Arizona State In OT Wensman Scores Game-Winner In First OT Period

LONG BEACH, CA-- Christina Wensman's second goal of the game, at 1:07 in the first overtime period, lifted Long Beach State to a 7-6 overtime win over Arizona State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo game on Sunday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. Cassie Azevedo joined Wensman with two goals on the day. With the win, the second in a row for The Beach, the 49ers improve to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in theMPSF. Arizona State falls to 11-10 overall and 3-6 in league play.
The 49ers were able to capitalize on a six-on-five opportunity in the first overtime period. Wensman scored from eight feet out to put the 49ers on top 7-6 with 1:07 remaining. ASU did not score in either overtime period and managed just two shots on goal. Long Beach State goalie Kim Hayes was exceptional in goal finishing with 12 goalie saves on the day, including two in overtime.
Arizona State jumped on the 49ers in the second quarter breaking open a 2-2 game with three unanswered goals. Traci Aparicio (4;43), Addison Doud (2:37) and Katie Hedley (0:01) all scored in the second quarter to give ASU a 5-2 halftime lead. The 49ers turned up their defensive pressure in the second half and Hayes was responsible for five second half saves.
The 49ers cut the deficit to 5-3 on a goal by Dolores Johnson with 1:21 left in the third. Long Beach would then rattle of three straight goals in the fourth quarter to take a 6-5 lead. Tara Campbell (6:26), Rachelle Denaro (3:50) and Azevedo (1:46) all scored to give Long Beach the lead. But, ASU would counter, as Kim Buck scored with 1:02 left to tie the game. The Sun Devils also had the ball at the end of the game with 14 seconds left on the game clock, but their shot hit the crossbar and went out of play sending the contest to overtime.
The 49ers will next be in action next weekend when they play at Pacific and Stanford. |
