Balanced Attack Leads Beach Past Gauchos 11-9
LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (10-9, 2-5 MPSF) produced a balanced attack led by three goals from Marina Canetti and two scores a piece from Rachelle Denaro and Cassie Azevedo to give them an 11-9 victory over visiting No. 8-ranked UC Santa Barbara (12-11, 2-6 MPSF) on Saturday. Kim Hayes had 12 saves in goal for the 49ers, countering four goals from Alaina Whitaker and three more from Gillian Morgan for UCSB. "It was a good step forward for us. The part of the game I was really pleased with was our counter attacks," said Head Coach Ken Lindgren. "Tara Campbell had a great game and Kim Hayes played well, making some big saves early. It was good game for us." After Whitaker made it 2-1 with 30 seconds left in the first period, LBSU went on the attack in the second period, scoring four straight, including a Denaro shot through traffic with four seconds left to lead 5-2. The Gauchos had a comeback in store in the third, scoring four of the next five goals, tying the game at 6-6 with 49 seconds left in the third on a fastbreak goal by Morgan. After exchanging goals to make it 7-7, LBSU responded with three straight, as Canetti (4:28), Denaro (3:32) and Azevedo (3:00) each scored to give LBSU a 10-7 advantage. The 49ers close out the homestand with Arizona State at noon on Sunday. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
