Cavaliers Score Three Runs in the Top of the Eighth

LONG BEACH, CA – Virginia used a three-run eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and leave Long Beach State with a 4-2 win on Wednesday afternoon.
The 49ers fell to 10-10, while the Cavaliers improved to 13-5.
Virginia got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Amy McKean's single scored Sara Larquier, who led off the inning with a single.
Long Beach State responded in the fourth inning to tie the score at 1-1 when Brook LeSage connected for a two-out double that plated Lacy Tyler.
The score remained deadlocked at 1-1, before Long Beach State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. However Tyler was unable to produce a hit and flied out to second baseman, Elea Crockett to end the inning.
Virginia began the eighth inning with the International Tie-Breaker rules in place. Thus Jessica Taylor was placed on second base to start the inning. McKean led off with a double, allowing Taylor to score and give UVA a 2-1 lead. The Cavaliers added two more runs to give them a 4-1 lead.
Long Beach State could just muster one run in the bottom of the eighth when a Brianna Goad single scored Franciska Morlet.
Karla Wilburn (4-2) picked up the win for the Cavaliers.
Jennifer Martinez (2-5) suffered the loss for The Beach after allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts over eight innings of work. Goad finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Long Beach State hosts the Long Beach State Invitational, Mar. 10-12 at Mayfair Park.
