49ers Win 11th In A Row
Beach Moves Up To No. 25 Nationally
March 7, 2006 LONG BEACH, CA-- It was a banner day for the Long Beach State women's tennis team on Tuesday. Tuesday morning they moved up to No. 25 in the nation in the latest FILA/ITA Collegiate Rankings, and in the afternoon they won their eleventh consecutive match defeating No. 56-ranked Boston College 6-1 at the 49er Campus Courts. Long Beach improves to 11-2 on the season while BC falls to 4-2.
Long Beach got off on the right foot in doubles action, winning all three matches. At the No. 1 spot, No. 25-ranked Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks won 8-6 over Dasha Cherkasov and Lana Krasnopolsky. At two doubles, Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams recorded an 8-1 over Szilvia Szegedi and Alina Sullivan. At the No. 3 spot the 49ers Rachael Porsz and Stephanie Bengson won 8-2 over the Eagles Sarah Svoboda and Gia Nafarrete..
Singles action saw the 49ers win five of the six singles matches in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, Grady came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win over #94-ranked Szilvia Szegedi. The win was Grady's third over a nationally-ranked player this spring and extended her winning streak to eight in a row. At No. 2 singles, #91-ranked Williams rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Cherkasov. Bengson won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles over Krasnopolsky. Rocha won at four singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Sullivan and Weeks won her ninth consecutive singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nafarrete at No. 5 singles. The only 49er loss came at the six spot, as Svoboda won 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 over Porsz.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, March 10 when they play at UC Riverside.
