Beach Surrender a 3-0 Lead in the Seventh

LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 22-ranked Baylor (8-3) scored five unanswered runs and evened the series with host No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (10-6) with a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon. Baylor pounded out 13 hits, as Zach Dillon and Kevin Russo had three hits a piece.

Matt Cline and Jose Hernandez each had two hits in the loss for the Dirtbags, who surrendered a 3-0 lead in the middle innings.

Andrew Carpenter's (2-1) 17 inning scoreless streak came to an end in the sixth as three-straight singles cut the LBSU lead to 3-1. A squeeze by Matt Sodolak then cut it further to 3-2.

Baylor took the lead in the seventh with a one-out triple from Chase Gerdes and a single from Beamer Weems to make it 4-3, chasing Carpenter from the game. Carpenter went six and one-third innings, giving up four runs on eight hits.

Baylor's Cory VanAllen (2-1) left after six innings with a 4-3 lead, giving up three unearned runs on six hits. Jeff Mandel got the final four outs for his fourth save.

The bottom of the order came through for The Beach in the fourth following a leadoff error by second baseman Kevin Russo. Hernandez and Jordan Struble, both with averages near the Mendosa line, came through with RBI singles to make it 2-0. Cline added an RBI single to give the Dirtbags a 3-0 lead. All three runs in the inning were unearned.

The series and the homestand conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. LBSU then embarks on a four-game roadtrip, beginning at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Texas next weekend.
