Turner Named Big West Pitcher of the Week (for the second straight week): Junior Michelle Turner was selected as the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week, as announced by the league office on Monday. This was her third overall Pitcher of the Week honor this season.Turner (Buena Park) collected wins No. 10 and 11 vs. Utah Valley State on Sunday at the 49er Softball complex. In game one, Turner pitched a three-hit shutout, her fifth of the season, to go along with six strikeouts (no walks) in the 1-0 win. Moreover, Turner did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Turner replaced Jennifer Martinez in the top of the seventh inning of game two (Martinez left with the 49ers down 3-2) and picked up the win after inducing a ground out to end the inning. Jessica Beaver's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh lifted LBSU to the 5-3 win. For the season, Turner has complied an 11-5 record with a 1.44 ERA and 90 strikeouts. Turner in fact has walked just two batters over her last five starts.

Last Week Recap: A Breezy Goad RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave LBSU a 1-0 win in game one over Utah Valley State, before a Jessica Beaver three-run home run the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the 49ers to a 5-3 win over the Wolverines in game two on Sunday afternoon at the 49er Softball Complex. The 49ers started their rally in the seventh inning in the first game, when Melanie McCauley drew a two-out walk. Stefanie Trutanic then was placed at first base as the pinch runner. After a Franciska Morlet single advanced Trutanic to second base, Goad followed with the single to score Trutanic. Michelle Turner (10-5) collected the victory in the circle, after allowing just three hits to go along with six strikeouts (no walks). It was her fifth shutout of the season. Moreover, Turner has walked just two batters in her last five starts. Long Beach State held a 1-0 lead, before Utah Valley State scored two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead in game two. The 49ers evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lacy Tyler scored after McCauley grounded out to the short stop. Utah Valley State responded in the top of the seventh when Chris Jiminez's triple plated Sara Roskelley to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead. Long Beach State once again used its late game heroics in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Goad led off with a walk, and Tiffanie Wedell reached on an error by the first baseman, Beaver slammed a three-run home run over the left field wall to lift LBSU to the 5-3 win. Turner collected the win (her 11th) after she replaced Jennifer Martinez, who left the game when the 49ers trailed 3-2. Beaver finished game two, 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
News & Notes Headlines in ‘06 • Long Beach State will try and win its third consecutive Big West Title (6th overall) in program history • The 49ers were picked second, behind CS Fullerton in the annual Big West Pre-Season Coaches Poll, released in January • Long Beach State lost three first-team all-conference performers last year (Meredith Cervenka, Lauren Johnson, Marcel Torres).
