49ers Prepare for Busy Week LBSU Faces No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday

The 49ers then travel to Santa Barbara for the Commercial Capital Classic, Feb. 17-19, hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
About UCLA: The Bruins have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 54-7 this season. Anjelica Selden leads UCLA with a 3-0 record in the circle with a 0.00 ERA and 34 strikeouts. The Bruins are hitting .443 as a team.
About the Commercial Capital Classic: Long Beach State competes in the six-team tournament, Feb. 17-19. LBSU faces Tulsa, CS Northridge, UCSB, San Diego State, and Rider College.
Last Week Recap: The 49ers got off to a quick start to the 2006 season defeating both Illinois-Chicago and Southern Utah at the Alexis Resort Softball Classic hosted by UNLV, Feb. 10-12. Michelle Turner made her 49er debut by pitching a one-hit shutout (with five strikeouts) to go along with a two-run home run in the fifth inning in the 4-0 win over Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 10. After an 11-6 win over Southern Utah, LBSU dropped three straight to end the tournament. The 49ers did hold leads late in all three games. Jessica Beaver hit for a .353 average with three doubles and three RBI. Turner went yard twice for The Beach as well. Quick Storylines in ‘06 • Long Beach State will try and win its third consecutive Big West Title (6th overall) in program history • The 49ers were picked second, behind CS Fullerton in the annual Big West Pre-Season Coaches Poll, released in January • Long Beach State lost three first-team all-conference performers last year (Meredith Cervenka, Lauren Johnson, Marcel Torres). Cervenka was a three-time BWC Co-Pitcher of the Year, while Torres was a two-time BWC Co-Pitcher of the Year • Keep an eye on: Jonae Perez, Jessica Beaver, and Tiffanie Wedell. Perez was the 2005 Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year. Beaver had an outstanding Fall season and should be in the starting line-up. Wedell has been the staple at second base for the 49ers. She was a 2005 Big West Honorable Mention • Long Beach State has a very young squad, featuring eight newcomers (six freshmen). Michelle Turner and Lindsay Russo are both junior transfers • The 49ers play five opponents ranked in the Top-15 (UCLA, Arizona, Oklahoma, Washington, and Northwestern) this season. Turn right at the "T" junction and pass through three lights. After the third light, turn left at the first stop sign, Stadium Road. The softball field and parking lot will be on your left. From the North, take Glen Annie/Storke Road exit and drive toward the ocean (away from the mountains.) Head straight through a 4-way intersection and 2 more lights. Turn left onto El Colegio Road. Take a left onto Stadium Road. The softball field and parking lot will be on your right. Spectator Parking: UCSB charges for day, night and weekend parking. DIRECTIONS TO GIRSH PARK From Santa Barbara or Goleta, take 101 North to the Glen Annie/Storke Road exit. Head towards the ocean (away from the mountains) on Storke Road. Cross over Hollister Avenue; pass McDonald's, Home Depot and Fire Station 11 on your right. Turn right on Phelps Road, which is the first street past the fire station. The park is on your right. The first parking lot is for the soccer field. The second parking lot is for the softball field, basketball courts, restrooms and park office. You may visit the Girsh Park website at www.girshpark.org for a map. A Look Inside the Numbers: Long Beach State has been most productive in the third and fifth innings of games this season. The 49ers have scored a total of 12 runs in the third inning and 10 in the fifth inning. However, LBSU has been out-scored 11-0 in the sixth and seventh innings of games this season.
