LBSU Picked Second in Pre-Season Softball Poll Season Begins Feb. 10
January 11, 2006 IRVINE, CA – The Long Beach State softball team earned 39 points and one first place vote for a second place prediction in the annual Big West Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll released on Wednesday. CS Fullerton received six first place votes and 48 total points for the No. 1 slot in the poll. The Titans return four all-conference players from last year's roster.
The 49ers finished the 2005 campaign with a 39-16 record and its second straight league title (LBSU went 19-2 in conference play). Long Beach State lost six seniors from last year's squad, including three-time conference Co-Pitcher of the Year, Meredith Cervenka, and two-time conference Co-Pitcher of the Year, Marcel Torres. LBSU does return several young players, including sophomore Jonae Perez, who earned the Freshman Field Player of the Year honor last season.
Cal Poly followed in third place with 32 points. The Mustangs finished second in the conference standings last season under the direction of 2005 Big West Coach of the year Jenny Condon.
Rounding out the Big West Conference poll was UC Santa Barbara, Pacific, CS Northridge, and UC Riverside.
Long Beach State opens its 2006 season on Feb. 10 at the UNLV Classic.
