Former 49er Qualifies For U.S. Open June 8, 2005
LONG BEACH, CA--Former Long Beach State golfer John Mallinger, a first team All- Big West pick in both 2000 and 2001, has qualified to play in this year's U. S. Open Golf Championship. Mallinger, who has been playing on the Canadian PGA Tour this year, was one of 149 players at Woodmont CC, in Rockville, MD, who were playing for 22 spots in the Open Championship. Mallinger carded two rounds of 67 for an 8-under par score in the 36-hole qualifying event. The U. S. Open will be played at the Pinehurst No.2 Golf Course in Pinehurst Village, NC, from June 13-19.
Former Bay Hill Invitational Champion Paul Goydos, a first team All-PCAA pick at Long Beach State in 1985, just missed qualifying to play in this year's Open Championship in the same qualifying event. Goydos shot a 7-under par 135, and was part of a playoff, but finished as the first alternate. This status still gives him a shot at playing in the Open if someone withdraws before the start of the tournament. If Goydos does make it into the tournament, it will be his 9th Open Championship. His best finish was in 1999, the last time the Championship was played at Pinehurst No.2, when he had the first round lead with a 4-under par 67, before ultimately finishing in 12th place.
Nick Seymour, a second team All-Big West selection in 2001, missed qualifying for the Open Championship by one shot in the qualifying event held at El Caballero CC in Tarzana. Seymour is the third alternate from that site.
