49ers End Season in Sixth Place at MPSFs

49ers Fall 8-4 in Fifth Place Game BERKELEY, CA-- No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (21-9) finished its season with an 8-4 loss to sixth-seeded California in the fifth place game at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Cassie Azevedo and Marina Canetti each had two goals for the 49ers. LBSU finished the championship in sixth place, splitting its last 12 games of the season. The team's 21 wins were the third-most in school-history. Wawrzynski was one of seven seniors playing in their final contest, as Wawrzynski ended her career fifth all-time with 149 goals. Fellow senior Bri Hawkins (San Diego) made seven saves in net on Sunday and 40 for the tournament, breaking her own single-season record for saves with 246. Hawkins finished her career with a school-record 868 saves. Robyn Gordin (Cerritos) finished her four-year career with 27 goals this year and 83 in her career, ninth-best all-time, while two-year 49er Jessica Levin (Seal Beach ) scored 20 goals this year and 42 in 2004-05. Sarah Vejar finished with 30 career goals while Laura Branch and Jeanine Jackson also played in their final game. Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach/Wilson HS) will return for her senior season, fourth all-time in career goals with 152, after finishing her third season with 66 goals, fifth-best in a single season. Azevedo could break the career record for goals, as she is just 55 goals behind all-time leader Angelica Garcia (2001-04). Azevedo had eight goals over the last four games. The Beach are slated to return three starters next year, as 2-meter (defender) Tara Campbell, and attacker Alison Braden who had 28 goals this year and 64 in her career, will join Azevedo in 2006. Sophomore Christina Wensman was also a part-time starter. |
