Dirtbags Win Another One in the Ninth
LONG BEACH, CA-- A Brandon Godfrey sacrifice fly ended a Tuesday night affair in Southern California with No. 13-ranked Long Beach State (22-10) winning its fifth straight with a 2-1 ninth inning victory over visiting UCLA (7-18). It was the Bruins' 14th-straight loss. The victory made a winner out of Neil Jamison (3-0), who pitched a scoreless ninth as the 49ers' seventh pitcher of the night. Bryan Beck (0-5), who pitched the final 2.2 innings, took the loss. LBSU started the ninth with a bunt single to short by Cole Jacobsen, followed by a slow roller by Steve Velazco just past the pitcher to put two on with two out. Velazco, who had squared to bunt, before pulling the bat back twice in taking two strikes, came through with an 0-2 count infield single to keep the rally going. Following a sacrifice bunt by Evan Longoria, Godfrey sent one into right field for the final play of the night. Troy Tulowitzki tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of first, the 13th of his career and his first of the season. A leadoff triple by Will Penniall was one of three hits in the first inning, as Donnie Hume settled down after an RBI single by Sean Carpenter to retired six of the next seven batters, and give up just that one run in two innings of work. Cody Evans worked the next 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, before Brett Andrade pitched a perfect fifth. Andrew Liebel pitched a scorless sixth, before Steve Hammond worked out of trouble in the seventh. UCLA had a chance to break a 1-1 tie against Hammond, loading the bases before a foul popup followed by a strikeout ended the threat. With the infield in, a great infield dive by Tulowitzki at short, loaded the bases but kept the game tied with an infield hit. Matt Fitts, LBSU's sixth pitcher, then pitched a scoreless ninth. Adam Simon left with a no-decision, giving up one run on four hits over 5.0 innings as he made a Tuesday night interesting with three walks, two hit batters and five strikeouts. The Dirtbags return to conference play this weekend when they travel to UC Irvine for three games starting on Friday. Lefthander Cesar Ramos (6-3) is slated to started the opener having thrown three-straight complete games over his last three starts. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
