49ers Open Up MPSF Play with Win
BERKELEY, CA-- No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (20-7) began its quest for its first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament with an 8-4 win over 12th-seeded Arizona State (9-20) on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. The win sets up a matchup with fourth-seeded Hawaii on Friday at 2 p.m, who beat Pacific in the championship's first game. Junior Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach/Wilson HS) led the 49ers with three goals, while Alison Braden (Calgary) and Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) added two goals a piece. After a sluggish first half which saw The Beach lead just 3-2, the 49ers turned on the jets, outscoring the Sun Devils 5-2 in the second half. Bri Hawkins made eight saves in goal. "We started game kind of slow and even though dominated, we just could not put it away in the first half," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, whose teams have now won 20 games in each of the past three seasons. "In the second half we were able calm down and put the game away." There are five automatic berths and three at-large selections to the eight-team NCAA Championship in Michigan starting on May 13. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
