Pacific Defeats Beach 5-1 in Series Opener
STOCKTON, CA-- Luke Massetti (5-5) pitched eight strong innings as Pacific (18-22, 4-6 Big West) nipped No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (27-14, 8-2 Big West) 5-1 on Friday evening. It was the 49ers second-straight loss following a loss at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday. Massetti gave up one run on four hits, striking out seven and walking just two to outduel 49er ace Cesar Ramos (8-4). Ramos picked up his first loss in six decisions, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings. Ramos entered the week ranked second in the nation in wins. Massetti and closer Josh Schmidt retired the final eight Dirtbags in order. Catcher Brandon Gottier drove in two runs, and went 2-for-4 for the Tigers. An Evan Longoria home run in the top of second tied the game at 1-1, but then it was all Pacific as they scored four unanswered to win. After Ramos had retired 11 straight, a one-out solo homerun by Justin Baum made it 2-1 in the fifth. UOP then added one in the sixth, on a two-out run scoring single from Gottier to make it 3-1. Pacific then added two more in the eighth off of Brett Andrade to lead 5-1. Andradehit a batter and gave up an intentional walk to load the bases in the eighth, before a one-out single by Gottier made it 4-1. Andrade's second hit batter of the inning, with the bases loaded, made it 5-1. Andrade ended up giving up two runs on two hits in the inning. LBSU had a chance to break the 1-1 tie in the fifth, but a leadoff double by Chris Jones was wasted after Chuck Sindlinger and Steve Velazco both struck out. Leftfielder Danny Mocny was shaken up in the bottom of the second inning after crashing into the outfield wall following an inning ending catch off the bat of Ryan Wilmer. Mocny remained in the ballgame and had a one-out single the very next half inning, but then left the game in the fourth inning. His status is day-to-day. The Dirtbags continue its series in Northern California with games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
