Dirtbags Get Back on Track with 11-2 Win
STOCKTON, CA-- The rain came down early and the hits came later for No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (28-14, 9-2 Big West) as the Dirtbags evened the series with host Pacific (18-23, 4-7 Big West) with an 11-2 win on Saturday afternoon. The weather report predicted rain and the skies opened up for most of the early part of the game, but as the skies cleared the bats kept swinging, pounding out 15 hits and scoring a season-tying 11 runs. Marco Estrada (6-0) meanwhile picked up his first win since March 19, giving up one run on four hits over eight innings. The junior fell one strikeout short of his career-high, set last week against CS Northridge, striking out 10 Pacific batters. At one point today Estrada retired nine in a row. Estrada had compiled four straight no-decisions prior to today's win, etching a 2.08 ERA over that time. Tito Cruz and Scott Bradley pounded out three hits a piece, while Sean Boatright drove in three runs and extended his hit streak to 19 games with an RBI double as part of a five-run sixth. Tom Sarti and Troy Tulowitzki both hit homeruns. Tulowitzki gave The Beach its first lead, at 2-1, with a two-run homer to left center in the third inning. Matthew Pena (1-2) went the first three innings for the Tigers giving up two runs on four hits. LBSU then added another run in the fifth to lead 3-1. Three straight two-out singles ending with an RBI single from Bradley gave The Beach a two-run advantage off of reliever Jason Haar. The Dirtbags exploded in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on four hits to lead 8-1. Boatright extended his hit streak to 19 games with a two-run double to right-center, before a three-run double by Cruz made it 8-1. Sarti, after scoring twice after reaching on two separate errors earlier in the contest, made sure no Pacific Tigers would touch the ball in his fifth at-bat as his first homerun of the season to made it 9-1 in the seventh. Two groundballs over the eighth and ninth innings completed the scoring and made it 11-1. The finale of the series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m
