Beach Pound Out 20 Runs and 25 Hits Over Final Two Games

STOCKTON, CA-- No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (29-14, 10-2 Big West) scored in eight-straight innings over two games and took its ninth-straight series with a 9-2 victory over host Pacific (18-24, 4-8 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The Dirtbags scored 20 runs and added 26 hits over the final two games of the series.

Jared Hughes (6-2) won his fifth-straight, giving up two runs on seven hits over six-plus innings. After giving up a run in the first inning, Hughes retired 10 straight and pitched to two over the minimum from the second through the sixth innings, before tiring and giving up a run on two hits in the seventh. Hughes' consecutive scoreless innings streak ended with one out in the first inning at 20.2 innings.

Troy Tulowitzki went 2-for-4 with three RBIs including his second homer of the series, while Evan Longoria added a 2-for-4 afternoon. Scott Bradley had three hits today and six for the series. The Dirtbags had 11 hits today.

LBSU began the onslaught early, scoring twice in the first and then adding four unearned runs in the second off of two errors by shortstop Anthony Jackson. Tulowitzki drove in three of the first six runs with an RBI single in the first to make it 1-0 and a two-run homer in the second to make it 6-1.

The Dirtbags added two more runs in the third off an RBI single from Bradley and a sacrifice fly from Sarti to make it 8-1. By scoring in the first three innings today, LBSU scored in eight-straight innings of the series.

Brett Manning (1-5) was chased from the game in the third inning giving up eight runs (four earned) on six hits over two and one-third innings. Tyler McCready pitched well in relief, giving up one unearned run over four and two-third innings.

An RBI single by Chris Jones in the seventh made it 9-1.

The Dirtbags will return home next weekend when they host UC Davis in a three-game non-conference series starting on Friday. This week's Mike Weathers Show on Wednesday at 6 p.m. from Cirivello's in Long Beach will feature Hughes and fellower pitcher Donnie Hume.
