Ramos Hurls Another Gem
LONG BEACH, CA-- Cesar Ramos (9-4) used just 98 pitches to pitch a five-hit shutout, as the the No. 11-ranked Long Beach State Dirtbags (30-14) defeated UC Davis (21-19) 4-0 on Friday evening. The Beach broke open the game in the eighth ining with three runs as Sean Boatright and Troy Tulowitzki had two hits a piece. After catching Daniel Descalso napping off first to end the first, Ramos retired the next 14 in a row, pitching to the minimum through six innings. A single by Grant Hirneise broke up the streak in the sixth, but Hirneise was erased by a double play ball to end the inning and keep it at 0-0. Ramos used just 32 pitches through four innings and used another nine pitches in the fifth. His pitch count only reached 70 through seven innings. Ramos gave up just one hit through five and single hits in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Dirtbags saw the ball leave the infield just once in the sixth, but took a 1-0 lead for Ramos. Jordan Struble led off the inning with a single to leftfield and then two perfectly placed bunt base hits loaded the bases. Tom Sarti then hit a shot right at shortstop Brandon Oliver, that was mishandled, and allowed the only run of the inning to score. Following two outs, with the bases still loaded, first baseman Lukas Kirby made a great diving catch in shallow rightfield to save any more runs and end the inning. Prior to the sixth, Aggie starter Dave McKae (6-4) had pitched to the minimum through five, using just 58 pitches. Boatright broke up the no-hitter to lead off the fifth, extending his hit streak to 21 games, but was quickly erased by a double play ball by UC Davis. The flood gates opened in the eighth inning as The Beach scored three runs to lead 4-0, chasing McKae from the game after he gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over seven-plus innings on 100 pitches. Back-to-back RBI singles from Troy Tulowitzki and Boatright made it 3-0, before a sacrifice fly made it 4-0. The non-conference series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
