Dirtbags Use the Longball to Shutout Davis
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long known for its pitching prowless, Blair Field saw No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (31-14) tied a stadium record with four home runs en route to a 9-0 win over visiting UC Davis (21-20). The nation's leading ERA, which has not allowed a run in the series, ran its scoreless steak to 20 straight innings heading into Sunday's finale, while lowering its ERA to 2.09. Troy Tulowitzki hit his fifth and sixth homers of the season, while Evan Longoria and Chuck Sindlinger had one each as LBSU pounded out a season-high 17 hits. Tulowitzki ended up 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Sindlinger went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Scott Bradley had his fourth-straight multi-hit game with two hits. The four home runs tied a Blair Field record, which last happened on April 9, 1999 when current Mariner Greg Dobbs hit two for the Dirtbags, and Jaeme Leal and 2004 American League Rookie of the Year Bobby Crosby hit one a piece. The franchise had hit just five home runs twice in Long Beach, back in 1992 and in 1979, both when Blair Field was not the official home of the 49ers. Tulowitzki made it 2-0 in the first with his first blast and then put the icing on the cake with a solo homer in the sixth to make it 9-0, more than enough for Marco Estrada (7-0) who combined with Matt Fitts on a three-hit shutout, by giving up three hits over eight innings. Estrada struck out seven and walked none. Estrada was masterful yet again, pitching to just three over the minimum and retiring the final eight batters he faced. Estrada used just 92 pitches through eight innings to do it as well. Bradley made it 4-0 in the fourth inning as part of a four-run fourth, as his two-run single proceeded a two-run homer by Sindlinger to make it 6-0. Longoria added a two-run homer in the fifth, as UC Davis starter Michael Potter (3-5) was chased from the game after four and one-third innings, after giving up eight runs on 12 hits.
