49ers Can't Hold on to Early Lead
LOS ANGELES, CA-- No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (19-6, 8-3 MPSF) nearly pulled off an upset of top-ranked UCLA (27-0, 12-0 MPSF), only to watch the Bruins score six unanswered to pull away with a 12-7 win on Wednesday afternoon. Bri Hawkins (San Diego) made 12 saves in goal for The Beach, as Robyn Gordin (Cerritos) and Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) had two goals a piece. The Beach looked strong early, as Gordin's second goal of the day, at 3:55 in the second period, gave the 49ers a 4-3 lead. LBSU had taken a 2-1 lead on the first of two goals from Wawrzynski as they kept the Bruins on its heals for much of the first nine minutes of the contest. UCLA though would respond with the final four goals of the half and lead 7-4 on a Molly Cahill goal with 33 seconds left. The seven goals by The Beach were the second-most given up by the Bruins all season. "UCLA has a lot of experience ballplayers and we did not adjust fast enough when they adjusted to a much more physical type of play," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo. "I think after that 4-0 run to end the half, we played when them pretty evenly, but you can't give a team like UCLA a four-goal lead." Garbrielle Domanac had three goals for the Bruins to lead them. The 49ers close out the regular season on Friday at UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships start next week in Berkeley. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
