49ers Host Tournament This Weekend

49ers Host Annual Tournament This Weekend National Statistics LONG BEACH, CA-- The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State 49ers (15-5, 7-2 MPSF) will host its annual Beach Tournament, featuring 13 varsity programs, this Saturday and Sunday at the campus pool with the 49ers playing four times, on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. in an Mountain Pacific Sports Federation showdown with CS Northridge (14-12, 2-8 MPSF) and in another contest with UC Santa Cruz (7-19) at 4:10 p.m. On Sunday The Beach will host Santa Clara (15-12) at 11:30 a.m. and Hartwick (19-7) at 4:10 p.m. Sunday's home finale will also be senior day for Laura Branch (Monrovia), Robyn Gordin (Cerritos), Bri Hawkins (San Diego), Jeanine Jackson (Los Angeles), Jessica Levin (Seal Beach), Sarah Vejar (Burbank), and Drue Wawrzynski (Los Alamitos). The tournament will also feature, amongst others, No. 4-ranked Hawaii (12-6), Michigan (19-11), Cal Baptist (19-8), Santa Clara (15-12), UC Irvine (11-11) and Hartwick (19-7). LBSU closes out the regular season next week when they travel to No. 1-ranked UCLA on Wednesday and to UC Santa Barbara next Saturday. The MPSF Championships begin on April 26 in Berkeley. The 49ers have been doing it with defense this season, especially with the play of goalie Bri Hawkins. Hawkins ranks 10th in the nation with 170 saves this year, as The Beach rank fifth nationally with 5.5 goals per game allowed. Hawkins is the school's all-time leader in saves with 792 entering the tournament. LBSU has held an opponent to six goals or less in 15 of the team's 20 games. Cassie Azevedo ranks 26th nationally with 42 goals this season, as she has scored at least two goals in eight of her last nine games. Wawrzynski has tallied 19 goals on the season and 134 in her career, fifth-best all-time. Azevedo's 128 goals to enter the weekend is sixth-best. Gordin, another four-year starter enters the weekend with 75 goals in her career and 19 this season. Alison Braden (Calgary) is second on the team with 20 goals to give her 66 in her career. Seniors Hawkins, Gordin and Wawrzynski are the main reason The Beach have two times set school-records for victories and been ranked anywhere from No. 5 to No. 3 in the nation throughout their careers. Levin has scored 15 goals this season and 27 goals in her two year career after transferring from San Jose State. Vejar, a four-year reserve for The Beach, tallied a career-best 13 goals as a freshman, and enters the weekend with 26 career goals. Branch has 11 career goals. Jackson is in her first season at The Beach after transferring from Stanford and has nine goals this season. Ricardo Azevedo will look for The Beach to produce its third-straight 20-win season, as the 49ers produced a 24-8 mark in 2003 and a 21-9 mark last season. Azevedo is in his fifth year at the helm of both the men's and women's programs, going 113-71. |
