LONG BEACH, CA - Cassie Azevedo scored three goals including two in the first quarter as the fourth-ranked 49ers defeated No. 10 San Jose State, 6-3, in an Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference match at the Campus Pool.
Long Beach State improved to 9-3, 2-0 in MPSF and the Spartans fall to 5-9, 0-3.
Azevedo scored her first goal with 3:51 left in the first quarter to put the 49ers ahead, 2-1, then scored her third goal in the third quarter for a 4-1 lead.
Drue Wawrzynski, Alison Braden and Robyn Gordin had one goal each, while goaltender Bri Hawkins stopped seven shots for the 49ers. Laura Scott led the Spartans with two goals and Sharon Hyrne had one goal.
SJSU's Krissy Hansell held the 49ers scoreless in the second quarter by stopping all four shots for a total of 10 saves.
The 49ers will host No. 3 Stanford on Sunday at noon.
