49ers Fall in Hawaii 8-7
HONOLULU, HI-- No. 5-ranked Hawaii snapped No. 3-ranked Long Beach State's (15-4, 7-1 MPSF) seven-game win streak with a come-from-behind, 8-7 island victory. Lefke Van Belkum scored the game-winner with 39 seconds left, after tying the game with 2:11 left. LBSU twice had leads in the fourth quarter only to watch the Wahine take full advantage of a home-pool edge by outscoring The Beach 3-2 in the final period. Cassie Azevedo scored the last of her three goals with 4:09 left to give The Beach a 6-5 lead, and after Hawaii tied it, Drue Wawrzynski scored her second goal to give the 49ers a 7-6 lead. But Van Belkum would tie it at 2:11 and then score the game-winner nearly a minute and a half later to win it. LBSU had a chance to tie it with 10 seconds left, but Meike deNouy blocked the 49ers' final attempt. Bri Hawkins maded 11 saves in net for The Beach. The 49ers will take the next week off before playing at USC on April 9. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
