Beach Opens MPSF With a Win
IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State junior attacker Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach/Wilson HS) scored a career-best five goals in leading the No. 5-ranked 49ers (5-1, 1-0 MPSF) to a 11-7 conference opening win over host UC Irvine (4-4, 1-1 MPSF) on Saturday afternoon. Alison Braden (Calgary) and Robyn Gordin (Cerritos) added two goals a piece, while Bri Hawkins (San Diego) made nine saves in the net. "With the first game of MPSF play, we're still adjusting to playing without Brazilian National Teamer Marina Canetti," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, whose team outscored the Anteaters 7-4 in the second half. "I thought we started off well, then got complacent at the end of the first period and into the second. I was please with how we finished." Azevedo, the reigning two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week, started The Beach in the right direction, scoring twice in the second quarter to give LBSU an early 2-0 lead with 4:45 left. UCI would fight back as the two teams would trade goals up until right before the half when Braden tallied the first of two straight to give the 49ers a 4-3 lead with 28 seconds remaining. Braden would score again, 4:37 into the third period to give LBSU a 5-3 advantage. For good measure, Gordin scored back-to-back goals in the fourth period to give LBSU a 9-5 advantage with 9-5 left. The 49ers head to the three-day UC Santa Barbara Tournament next weekend beginning on Friday. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
