49ers Roll Past Tritons Azevedo Keys Victory with Three Goals

LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team defeated the visiting UC San Diego Tritons, 9-4 at the Campus Pool on Saturday afternoon. Long Beach State improved to 4-1, while UCSD fell to 1-5.
Junior Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach) led the way for the 49ers with three goals. Senior Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) added two goals as well. Jeanine Jackson (Los Angeles), Christina Wensman (Mercer Island, WA), Alison Braden (Calgary, Alberta), and Jessica Levin (Seal Beach) provided the other four goals for The Beach. Senior goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego) netted two saves in goal for LBSU. Jessica Wong, Tobi Lyman, Britta Nordstrom, and Natalie Hockett scored all four goals for the Tritons. Kim Hockett recorded four saves in net for UCSD.
The Tritons jumped on the 49ers with a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Wong found the back of the net with 1:35 left in the period, followed by a goal from Lyman with 0:59 in the period.
Long Beach State scored its first goal in the second period, courtesy of Wawrzynski at 4:35 to cut the deficit to 2-1. A turnover in the Long Beach zone allowed Nordstrom to put UCSD up 3-1 at 4:04. The 49ers responded with a goal from Azevedo at 2:29 to pull The Beach within one at 2-3 at halftime.
The 49ers opened the third period with a pair of goals from Wawrzynski, who scored the equalizer at 4:03, and Jackson, who scored the go-ahead goal at 3:08. The Tritons, however, managed to tie the score at 4-4 after Hockett's goal at 1:55.
LBSU blanked UCSD in the final period, 4-0. Azevedo scored back-to-back goals at 4:31 and 2:29.
Long Beach State travels to UC Irvine on Feb. 19 at Noon.
