Roe Completes Cross Country Staff LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State adds experience and success to its cross country program by bringing Matt Roe on as the new assistant coach. Roe comes to the Beach from Western Illinois where he orchestrated one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Division-I running. As head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Western, Roe took the Westwinds from a sixth place to a second place finish at the Mid Con Cross Country Championships in his first two seasons. More impressively, in his first year on the track Roe helped guide the Western men to the Mid Con Outdoor Championship. Forty-Niner Director of Track and Field Andy Sythe foresees success following Roe West. "We have located and recruited a quality coach in Matt Roe. He offers both the know how and the desire to bring a championship to The Beach." In three years at the Western helm, Roe produced 24 All-Mid Con athletes, nine runners-up at the Mid Con Championships, three conference championships and two school records. Roe, a native of Seattle, was a three-time All-West Coast Conference cross country harrier and a three-time WCC scholar athlete at national power, University of Portland. "We have so many good reasons to feel good about our year ahead of us," said Sythe. "Our best days are ahead of us and with Matt guiding our distance program I don't expect those days to be very far away." |
