49ers Hire Anthony Stewart As Assistant Coach
July 27, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State head men's basketball coach Larry Reynolds announced today that Anthony Stewart will be joining the 49er staff as an assistant coach. Reynolds also named current assistant coach Reggie Howard as Associate Head Coach.
Stewart comes to LBSU from Columbus State Community College where he spent the past four years as an assistant coach. Stewart helped build the Columbus State program into one of the top Division II junior college programs in the country. In 2002-03 Columbus State went 16-16 and advanced to the NJCAA Region 12 Division II Tournament championship game. Last season the Cougars went 29-2, won their regular season conference title and were ranked No. 1 in the country the majority of the season. They began the season with 25 consecutive victories, but were upset by Cuyahoga in the Region 12 Tournament. Cuyahoga went on to win the NJCAA Division II national title.
"Anthony will be a great addition to our staff," said Reynolds. "He brings a wealth of business experience, but he has also shown to be a diligent recruiter. He will give us a new base in the Midwest and East, as well as being able to recruit locally and statewide."
While at Columbus State, Stewart recruited three All-Americans and five first team all-conference players, including current 49er Shawn Hawkins. Columbus State was 86-36 in his four years and reached its first-ever regional final.
Stewart was a four-year letterwinner in basketball at Mount Union College in Ohio and he lettered three years in baseball. He was selected team MVP of his basketball team two times and is on the Top 10 in scoring on the Mount Union career chart. Stewart earned his degree in Business Management in 1993 at Mount Union, while minoring in English. Originally from Akron, OH, Stewart prepped at Archbishop Hoban High School where he lettered in basketball and baseball.
Howard is entering his third year on Coach Reynolds' staff. Howard takes over the Associate Head Coach title, replacing Bill Carr who left in June to become the head men's basketball coach at UC San Diego. |
