49er Alum Mallinger Shines July 26, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Former Long Beach State men's golfer John Mallinger finished second at the 16th Annual Long Beach Open Golf Championship at El Dorado Park Golf Course on Sunday, July 25. Mallinger finished the 72-hole event at 21 under par, just one shot behind champion Steve Schneiter of Sandy, UT. Mallinger won $15,000 for his finish, which is just another in a string of fine finishes in the past two months, including two wins on the Hooters Tour, and a 3rd place finish in the Spanos Open in Stockton. In all, seven current or former 49ers cashed checks in this year's Long Beach Open Championship.
Upon the conclusion of the Long Beach Open, two former Long Beach State golfers—Mike Krantz and Mike Miles—were inducted into the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame. Krantz won the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championship and was an Honorable Mention All American in 1973. He won the Queen Mary Open in 1975, and played professionally in Asia for eight years. Miles, currently a teaching professional at the 49er's home course, Virginia CC, was a two time All American at The Beach. Miles twice qualified for the NCAA Championship as an individual and won two college tournaments during his college career. He played in the 1987 U. S. Open at The Olympic Club, after setting course records at both the Eisenhower and Zaharias golf courses at Industry Hills in the U. S. Open Sectional Qualifier.
Miles and Krantz join several other 49er coaches or players in the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame: Sue Ewart (1997), Paul Goydos (1996), Bob Livingstone (2001), Jamie Mulligan (2001), Mark O'Meara (1997), Millie Stanley (1996), Harlan "Pinky" Stevenson (1999), Del Walker (1996) and Marty Walker (1996).
