Azevedo Named MPSF Player of the Week

Azevedo Earns First Weekly Honor WOODLAND, CA-- Long Beach State sophomore women's water polo player Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach/Wilson HS) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's co-Player of the Week after leading the No. 4-ranked 49ers to three wins in Northern California. Azevedo had 11 assists and 10 steals for the weekend to go along with her eight goals as she shared the honor with USC's goalie Kelly Graff. Azevedo tallied a team-best four at No. 9-ranked California on Friday and a team-leading three at Pacific on Saturday. Azevedo led the team in steals and assists in each of the team's three games, tallying four asssists and three steals against the Bears and firing off three assists and four steals against UOP. Azevedo finished off the weekend with a goal, three steals and four assists at UC Davis. Azevedo leads the 49ers with 34 steals and 26 assists, as she is second at LBSU with 35 goals this season. This is the first weekly honor for Azevedo, whose brother Tony is a starter on the U.S. National Team, and whose father, Ricardo, is in his fifth season as head coach of both the men's and women's programs. The Beach (15-5, 5-3 MPSF) host UCLA in a contest at noon on Saturday. |
