Gauchos Spoil Regular Season Finale Azevedo Scores Two Goals in Losing Effort
April 24, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team dropped a 6-5 decision to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in the final regular season home match at the Campus Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Long Beach State fell to 19-7, 6-5 MPSF, while UCSB improved to 13-14, 3-7 MPSF.
The 49ers took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, courtesy of a penalty shot by Roberta Stewart at 5:10, and Cassie Azevedo at 2:30. However, UCSB rallied for two straight goals from Katy Kunkel (1:58) and Erika Clark (1:15) to even the score at 2-2 after one period of play.
The Gauchos built a 3-2 lead at 4:58 in the second period, courtesy of a Alaina Whitaker goal. Long Beach State responded quickly, as Jessica Levin scored the equalizer at 3:26.
Angelica Garcia netted her first goal of the afternoon, and 50th of the season in the third period at 2:34 to give LBSU a 4-3 lead heading into the fourth period. However, UCSB countered with goals from Kunkel (5:56) and Aimee Stachowski (4:13) to take a 5-4 lead. Azevedo tied the score for the 49ers with her second goal of the afternoon at 2:55 to force overtime.
However, Jennifer D'Anna's goal at 1:33 in the first overtime proved to be the game winner for the Gauchos.
LBSU will next be in action at the MPSF Water Polo Championships at the Los Alamitos Naval Base April 30-May 2.
