LBSU Wins Hawai'i Tournament 49ers Go 7-0 in Tournament; Torres: Outstanding Pitcher
March 7, 2004 HONOLULU, HI -- The Long Beach State softball team defeated Southern Illinois 2-1, and Hawai'i, 3-1, to capture first place in the 4th Annual Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament on Sunday night. Long Beach State finished the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record.
The 49ers improved their record to 17-4, marking the best record thru 21 games into a season since the 1988 squad went 18-3 thru 21 games.
Marcel Torres was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher of the Tournament, while Jamie Farnworth was named the Most Outstanding Player. Colleen Burdick, Meredith Cervenka and Arleigh Thorp were named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
LBSU edged Southern Illinois, 2-1 in the afternoon affair. Marcel Torres helped The Beach score its first run after leading off the inning with a single up the middle of the infield. Roxanne Staniorski then advanced Torres to second base after a sacrifice bunt. Melanie McCauley then connected for a double down the left field line to drive home Torres.
Long Beach State picked up its second run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth inning, courtesy of a Colleen Burdick score. Burdick started the inning with a double into left field, and was advanced to third base after a Lauren Johnson sacrifice bunt. Arleigh Thorp proceeded with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Burdick.
SIU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a solo home run. LBSU pitcher, Lindsey Knoff remained poised in the bottom of the seventh, allowing just one hit and no runs to preserve the 2-1 victory. Knoff collected her second victory of the season to improve to 2-2.
The 49ers rallied from a 1-0 deficit against host, Hawai'i to win in the nightcap, 3-1. The 49ers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Arleigh Thorp hit a solo home run, her second of the year, over the left center field fence.
Long Beach State added took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning after Johnson connected for a two-run home run in left field to put The Beach up 3-1.
Torres would not allow Hawai'i to score in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory. Torres improved her record to 8-1, while recording seven strikeouts.
