LBSU Crushes Siena, 15-0 49ers Record Second Largest Margin of Victory in School History; Defeats SIU, 3-0
March 4, 2004 HONOLULU, HI -- The Long Beach State softball team picked up a pair of victories in the 4th annual Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament on Thursday afternoon, defeating both Siena College, 15-0, and Southern Illinois, 3-0. The 49ers are now 12-4 on the season.
In the first game of the tournament, LBSU crushed Siena, 15-0. It was the second largest margin of victory in program history. LBSU jumped on Siena early with 12 first inning runs. The 12 runs scored were the second most scored in an inning in school history.
Lauren Johnson drove in the first run of the game with a double that plated Colleen Burdick, who led off with a walk. After Arleigh Thorp was issued a walk from Siena pitcher, Adrian St. Claire, Jamie Farnworth connected for her fourth home run of the season with a three-run blast (scoring Johnson and Thorp).
Lindsay Marksbury connected for her first hit and RBI of the season, after her single up the middle of the infield drove in Roxanne Staniorski. The 49ers reached the top of the order in the inning, when Burdick reached base with a single to center field, scoring Melanie McCauley. Tisha Salamino relieved St. Claire, only to hit Johnson with the bases loaded to score Marksbury. In all. LBSU score 12 runs on seven hits in the inning.
Long Beach State added one run in the bottom of the second inning, courtesy of another Farnworth RBI, scoring Burdick. The 49ers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, courtesy of a Marcel Torres RBI and Staniorski sacrifice RBI. The game was called after the fifth inning.
On the day, Farnworth went 2-for-2 with five RBI and two runs. Marksbury, Johnson, and Torres all had two RBI. Meredith Cervenka collected her sixth victory of the season (6-1) after 4.0 innings of work, allowing just two hits and two strikeouts.
In the second game of the tournament, Torres rebounded after her first loss of the season to UCLA (2/29) with a one-hitter to improve to 6-1 in a 3-0 victory over Southern Illinois. In fact Torres pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings before given up the only SIU hit.
The 49ers broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Johnson generated the 49er scoring after reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Johnson proceeded to register her third stolen base of the season, and eventually scored on a Farnworth single down the third base line.
A Staniorski RBI and McCauley RBI in the same inning gave The Beach a 3-0 lead. Torres remained solid, retiring the next three Southern Illinois batters to earn the victory.
